· Waxed floss: conventional floss coated with nylon. Also, available with the coating of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Disposable and hence used only for once. Recommended in people with normal healthy gingiva.


· Unwaxed floss: conventional floss without the nylon coating. Recommendations same as for waxed floss. Disposable.

How to use the floss?



For public without braces, the instructions are as follows:

Stand in front of the mirror. Take 18 inches (ca. 46 cm) of floss length from the box. Wind this floss to the middle finger of your hand followed by the middle finger of the opposite hand.

Hold it tight with the help of thumb and the index fingers. Guide the floss slowly between the areas of the two teeth. Do not snap. Glide it slowly in rubbing motion until it reaches the neck portion of the tooth. Gently curve the floss into C shape and slide it in up and down motion slowly. It helps in removing the plaque in the space between the gum and the tooth. Repeat it for all the teeth. Make sure you use fresh section of the floss for each tooth. Do not forget to floss the last tooth even though the access is difficult. Do not hurry as it may injure the gingiva.

Ask your dentist to demonstrate the use of floss. Instructions are similar except the floss has to be threaded between the teeth and the main wire first and then gently guide it towards the gum line and remove it from other side of the tooth. Carefully unthread the floss from the main wire and care must be taken not to dislodge the wire.
